D&D Beyond

Dungeons & Dragons Beyond: Digital D&D

If you’ve ever tried to introduce someone to Dungeons & Dragons, you know it’s usually a several hour (or even several day) affair. Even people who are excited about trying D&D for the first time can burn out during the process of creating their character, and if you’re trying to introduce the game to a group of people it can be even worse. Luckily, those days are gone, thanks to Dungeons and Dragons Beyond.

D&D Beyond Character Create

Dungeons & Dragons Beyond is an attempt to partially digitize the Dungeons & Dragons experience to make it easier for new players to get into the game, and to make it easier for experienced players and DMs who want to offload some of their duties. One way it does this is with the character creator, shown above. Players who just wanna start playing can just generate a character, while others can be walked through the process of customizing their own.

D&D Beyond is so much more than character creating, though. It is basically a full-fledged D&D digital assistant that you can use to help run as much or as little of your campaigns as you want. Some people will mostly use it solely for reference purposes when they need to look up which spells they can learn and cast. DMs might find it helpful as a way to browse monsters they might include in their next campaign.

You can also use D&D Beyond to remotely run a whole campaign, though. The DM can start a campaign and invite other players to it, and you can use D&D Beyond as a hub for your campaign. Combined with a Discord or Skype chat or something, you can run an entire campaign remotely, no matter how far away you live from all your fellow party members. D&D Beyond is free, so all you need to do to get your friends on board is get them to make an account.

By the way, I know that Dungeons & Dragons isn’t exactly a video game. A digital version of D&D is just as much of a videogame as, say, a digital version of Monopoly would be, though, so I figure it makes sense to highlight it here on My Dpad. Most importantly, I’m sure there’s someone reading this right now who has loved D&D all their lives, and could use something like this to get their friends interested. For those people, D&D Beyond could be a lifesaver.
